This time, Deston was prepared for visitors. I ran my fingers nervously over the ward, and nothing happened. I tried again, and it was like touching razor blades.

Deston, I thought down the bond, let me in. We need to talk.

Instantly, a door opened in the ward, and Cyrus and I stepped through into birdsong and the heavy scent of roses.

“You want me to come with? Or stay here?” Cyrus asked quietly. “For the record, I’d feel better if I came with you.”

“Deston won’t hurt me,” I said firmly, even though my stomach was churning with nerves. “But he won’t talk to me if you’re there.”

“I don’t think he’ll hurt you, Seraphina. I’m afraid of what you’ll find out. I don’t want your heart broken. Then I’d have to kill him, and everything would get messy. Well, messier than it already is.”

“Let’s not talk about killing anyone right now, shall we?” I laughed softly, despite my nervousness. “And let’s make a vow to keep this little trip to ourselves and give Luthor a mental health break, shall we?”

“I don’t know what’s worse.” He lifted his head and sucked in a deep breath of spring-like air. “That I allow myself to be talked into these schemes of yours, or that I actually enjoy them. I’ll be in your head the entire time. First sign of trouble, I’m ghosting you home.”

I left Cyrus lounging on a bench in the humidity as I made went my way through the gardens, up the stairs, into the front doors.

Where are you? I asked.

In the library, of course, Deston replied. The same place I’ve been for weeks.

Cyrus will stay outside, so you don’t have to worry about having an audience.

I paused in the doorway and drank him in. My mate was cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by a ring of open books, looking even more exhausted than the last time I’d seen him.

“You’ve been busy,” I commented dryly. Moving into the room, I sank into one of the worn, leather chairs. “Have you made any progress?”

“Progress on what?” His voice was slurred with exhaustion, his eyes dull.

“Locking Caine back in his cell.” I looked at all the books and shook my head. “I feel compelled to point out that even if you could, I don’t want him there. I emptied that prison out because I hated the thought of anything—even monsters—being locked up.”

Deston’s eyes went black. “If you knew who he really was, you’d have a different outlook.”

“Then tell me,” I urged. “Tell me everything and we’ll make the decision together, you, me, Luthor, and Cyrus.”

“Even if I did, you wouldn’t believe me, not with Luthor and Cyrus working as hard as they can to convince you I’m your enemy.”

Every piece of him was resistant, from the dark shadowy magic swirling around him, to the impenetrable mask that hid his feelings. Our bond was open, and yet, it was not. As if he’d closed that, too, in an attempt to hide his emotions.

I had to know why.

“You’re my mate, not my enemy, Deston.
